If you’re a budding musician then you’ll be inspired by Mike Stevens, professional saxophonist and Musical Director to ELO and Take That. Here he shares his top tips for having a successful career in music.

1. Personality and professionalism are just as important as talent.
Always remember to play for the music not for yourself!

2. Although it’s great to be brilliant on your instrument, versatility is just as important.
Learn different styles of playing. Being able to do backing singing is a big plus. Remember to be able to say “yes” to all requirements as this increases your chance of getting the gig.

3. Be confident but don’t try and steal the limelight
Remember it’s all about the artist.

4. Never forget you’re part of a team
Bringing some love to the music always helps, even if it’s not your kind of thing.

5. Enjoy the experience
Bring a positive vibe and you will always be booked.

See Mike talk with renowned cellist and Principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire, Professor Julian Lloyd Webber at our free City Talk. Mike will share his experiences from his career in the music industry and reflect on his journey from music student, to touring with one of the UK’s biggest bands.
