Underwear entrepreneur Michelle Mone is to host Birmingham City University’s ‘Business Advantage’ launch event next month as part of her new government role in encouraging start-ups and inspiring entrepreneurship.

BCU Advantage is the new business growth service from Birmingham City University. Working with a range of expert partners, it has been created to help businesses of all sizes achieve their goals. The launch event encourages business professionals to learn more about accessing funding for their start-ups and how the University can help businesses grow through collaboration, innovation and new product development.

Here Michelle shares some of her top tips on getting ahead in business, how to stay focused on your goals and what NOT to do…

The best thing to do is to DREAM BIG. It’s amazing what you can do once you get in the zone and get your mind sorted.

To get anywhere in the world of work, you’ve got to rely on yourself to SELF-MOTIVATE. If you don’t motivate yourself then you’re never going to reach your end goals. Having passion and determination to start with is a must.

Write down what you want to achieve in your life and in your career by FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE. Write down a plan of how you’re going to get there and look at those notes every day.

If you make a bad decision and mess up, hold your hands up and accept it. DON’T LOOK FOR EXCUSES OR BLAME ANYONE ELSE. Identify the cause of the problem and take everything you can from it – every mistake is a lesson learned, after all.

Planning and time management is a crucial part of being an entrepreneur. NEVER WAKE UP WITHOUT A PLAN. There are limited hours in a day, so it’s imperative that you plan these out meticulously to work as efficiently as possible.

Being flexible and open to change is crucial to success, especially when you’re starting out. DON’T BE SCARED TO ADAPT.

No matter our age, occupation or level success, we should NEVER STOP LEARNING. Not only will new skills and knowledge make you a better operator, but it will also give you inspiration, ideas and enlightenment. Learning is an essential ingredient of any successful business –  as soon as you close your mind, you are closing yourself off to other greater opportunities.

The BCU Advantage event will see Birmingham City University welcome business professionals to learn more about accessing funding for their start-ups and how the University can help businesses grow through collaboration, innovation and new product development.

Limited places are available for the event, which runs from 6pm until 8.30pm on Wednesday 4 November at the University’s Curzon Building. More information and register your interest.
