Maniba Zariat, third-year BA (Hons) Business and Marketing student

This year, during the Welcome Week, I had the opportunity to work on an exciting social media competition. Working alongside another Social Media Student Ambassador, Emma, we were enlisted to promote, engage and communicate our very exciting competition.

This comprised of attending various events throughout the week and recording individual videos of what students were doing to #BringOnBcu! With the chance to win £100 High Street Vouchers and free drink vouchers you can imagine the excitement, interest and buzz this created.

The events!

The two of us attended various events; from the Aloha Party to Laser Quest, the Scratch Festival to the Games Night and the Vice-Chancellor’s talk, we had the chance to meet a variety of students and learn about their experiences so far.

It was exciting, interesting and entertaining to listen to new students and also share our experiences, whilst live tweeting and engaging with them via social media. For some we were the first students they spoke to, so answering their questions and guiding them was very encouraging and rewarding.

Being a final year student, it was nice to relive University through new students. I saw their excitement, uncertainty and nerves and couldn’t help but feel happy and envious at the same time. Meeting new people, personal development, achieving invaluable knowledge and gaining amazing experiences were just some of the things I achieved at Birmingham City University. These fresh bunnies had just started their journey while mine was nearly over. I was officially an ageing rabbit.

An action packed Welcome Fair

The nostalgia didn’t stop there. This year the Welcome Fair was bigger and better than ever. With new societies, fun freebie stalls, performances, rock climbing, body zorbing and the boot camp challenge, the day was action packed! It was great to be part of the day and interview students whilst they embraced the activities.

But wait there’s more

Another fun surprise was that the Bullring Birmingham Bull also joined the Welcome Fair fun. Dressed in University clothes with an ID card to match, this popular statue rocked BCU attire! Those taking tours in the City Centre had the chance to enjoy the site and take pictures. This was a fun and awesome way for students to take part in the #BCUSUSelfie competition.

What made this year’s Welcome Fair even more special was the famous Friends 20th Sofa! A lot of students enjoyed the chance to take iconic pictures on the Friends sofa including me and Emma! Being a hard-core Friends fan I can honestly say this was a great moment for me and for others, I am sure.

Bringing On BCU

Being possibly the last Welcome Week I will experience (cue sad music) this was an awesome end. Meeting and interacting with new students during the Welcome Week was a great experience in itself and working alongside Emma it was an unforgettable week. The university knows how to throw an amazing Welcome Week. So to any future students remember to fully embrace ‪#‎BringOnBCU.
