Staff during an Open Day

Staff during an Open Day

Written by Gemma Ridlington ( Helpzone Advisor) and Harj Kallu (Finance Advisor)

Studying at University is an exciting life-changing experience which can, on occasion, be a little daunting. Student Services understands this and is here to support students with any questions, information or problems that may arise, in many different areas of advice.

At the Open Day you will get a taste of what Student Services is all about. Some of what we do is finance-related, meaning throughout the day we are delivering lots of finance talks to assist in you understanding the world of Student Finance. Are you wondering about tuition fee loans? Money to fund your living costs? When and how do I apply and repay student loans? Do we offer a Scholarship programme or bursary? The finance talks delivered will answer these questions and more. We definitely recommend attending a finance talk when visiting us on the Open Day and leaving with all your questions answered!

Student Services provides support to disabled students. At the Open Day you can speak to a member of the Disability Support Team about what support you can expect as a Birmingham City University student with additional requirements. We as a department ensure that students with a physical disability, long-term medical condition, mental health difficulties, sensory disability or learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) can access a range of support services to enable them to participate fully at University. If you need to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances then the Disability Support Team can provide support with this.

Do you want to enhance your employability and get a part time job whilst studying? Already thinking about your career after University? Considering doing a placement? Student Services has a dedicated Careers and Employment Zone team that can help you. You can speak to a member of staff on the day at the information stand about all things careers, including our online jobs board, the job shops that take place on campus, workshops on CV, interview skills and psychometric testing as well as one-to-one appointments.

At the Student Services information stands you’ll also find information on all the other things that we provide for our students. We have a BACP accredited Counselling team, a multi-faith Chaplaincy, International Student advice team, a Mental Health and Wellbeing team and a Childcare adviser. If you want further information about any of these services, please chat to a member of staff.

We recognise that there will be lots of information to take in at the Open Day, and that you may leave and think ‘I should have asked that’ or ‘I wonder how that works’. Student Services is happy to help you after you have left. If you take any of our information literature you will find all of our contact details on the back so drop us an email or give us a call. We are happy to answer your questions even after the Open Day has been and gone. You’ll also find us on social media – we tweet (@bcussv) and we facebook (www.facebook/bcussv) so we can approach us that way too.

If you want to speak to us at the Open Day, look for the bright blue t-shirts bearing the ASK logo. Don’t be shy, just Ask us!
