Wonderful World

Toby WatleyAs Director of Collections at Birmingham Museums Trust and the project lead for the museums I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘hi’ and to share with you my enthusiasm for this amazing new postgraduate course.

The course offers a unique opportunity to spend a year immersed within Birmingham’s award-winning museums and internationally renowned collection, whilst learning about innovation and leadership in museum practice.

Unlike many other postgraduate museum studies courses, you will learn from both academics and leading practicing museum professionals throughout the entire duration of the course.

Alongside BCU’s amazing educational facilities, the course offers incredibly rich learning resources by enabling students to learn from Birmingham Museums’ rich collection of over 800,000 objects spanning art, history and science. In addition, teaching and applied learning on live projects will take place across our nine museums, from the internationally renowned Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and award-winning Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, to Aston Hall’s majestic Grade I listed Jacobean Mansion and our Museum Collection Centre, where over 700,000 objects and artefacts are stored and made publicly accessible when not on display in a museum.

Birmingham Museums has been supporting student placements, traineeships, internships and apprenticeships for many years now, as well as delivering guest lectures to a number of postgraduate museum studies courses. One thing we encounter time and time again are the challenges faced by graduates who have the right qualifications but no where near enough practical experience to help them secure their first job in the museum/heritage sector.

This course is designed to specifically address that problem!

Through applying theoretical learning to real live museum projects, students will come away with that much needed experience and a much deeper understanding of museum practice to help them successfully pursue careers in the museum and heritage sector.

It really is an amazing learning opportunity!
