Jo Hurley_colourWhere and what did you study?
I had the pleasure of studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design with Retail Management here at Birmingham City University when it was previously University of Central England.
What are your career highlights?
Teaching in Hong Kong was a fantastic highlight as I loved working with students from international backgrounds in such a dynamic city. I also loved working as an external examiner at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and seeing the final projects and presentations that students put together on international fashion concepts.
What are your specialist areas of expertise?
After I graduated, I enjoyed working for the trend consultancy- The Future Laboratory. It was here that I learnt about the processes of trend research and how to investigate consumer tribes and behaviour. We came up with branding concepts for Marks and Spencer, Thomas Pink and the beauty brand Olay to name a few. Another specialism is identifying and styling vintage clothing which I learnt whilst archiving Wayne Hemingway and the Land of lost content’s vast collection of design items. I also had my own vintage boutique on ASOS and enjoyed showcasing my collection across London markets and vintage events.

What did you study at University?
I studied for my degree in BA (Hons) Fashion and Textiles at Ravensbourne in London. I decided to take the plunge and start my own fashion brand when I graduated as it is something I had always wanted to do. This was a great success and I took it to a fashion boutique on central London Carnaby Street, and with concessions in Topshop and Debenhams.
I am currently undertaking an MA in Visual Communication at BCU, this is a great opportunity to extend my knowledge and add to my skill set. I am specialising in brand experience and just undertook a brand audit project for Francesco, the hairdressing group.

Perception Magazine – My Final Major Project

Following your dreams, is something we hope to do in life.

What a pleasure to work with Evie in her final year, as she has journeyed through her life experiences, passions and knowledge. She has drawn them together and followed her dreams to make a dynamic, innovative, exciting final project.

I’m 23, just about to finish uni and go out into the real world. When I first started the course, I never dreamed of pursuing a career in journalism or PR in London. Now I have the confidence to do this! I also want to make my Final Major Project a reality, but I’ll tell you all about that in a moment! First I have to tell you why I created it.

I’ve been asked a few times how I came up with the idea and I think subconsciously it was because of what I’ve been through…

When I was 21, I was suddenly taken ill and ended up being admitted onto a stroke ward, which was really frightening.   Whilst I was there, I was lucky to receive regular visits from my friends and family, who bought me plenty of magazines to read whilst I recovered. Why wouldn’t you? It’s a perfect thing to bring for a Fashion Student! However, my illness meant that at the time, I found it difficult to concentrate properly and it was very hard for me to read the magazines. I remember feeling incredibly frustrated as I just couldn’t engage with the magazine content.
So fast forward two years to when  I started to plan for my Final Major Project. I started to think about what would make an original angle within fashion communication that I could focus on.   It was my personal experience in hospital that helped me find a unique approach.  I decided to create a new fashion magazine for the visually impaired…
