Collection Spotlight: Schubert Festival

A collection spotlight

To celebrate the Birmingham Conservatoire’s Schubert Festival (22-26 February), we thought we’d shine the spotlight on some of the online audio collections that Birmingham City University students and staff have access to, all for free!

To access any of our online resources, go to our A-Z of Resources page on iCity, where you will find each database listed alphabetically.

Archival Sound Recordings (British Library)

The British Library Sounds database contains over 60,000 recordings of music, spoken word and natural environments. Search ‘Schubert’ to discover not only recordings of Schubert performances, but mentions in narrative history pieces.

Classical Music Library

Alexander Street’s audio library contains almost 800 Schubert recordings.

Naxos Music Library

Thousands of Schubert recordings are available for you to listen online – full CD booklets are usually available to accompany them.

Naxos Video Library

This library contains videos of full concert performances, including almost 200 Schubert pieces.

Why not explore what these online resources have to offer?

Trial of Classical Scores Library to mark Marc Yeats premiere on January 8th

Classical Scores Library

Marc Yeats has just become composer-in-residence for the Thumb Ensemble, a contemporary music ensemble from the UK.

Their next performance is Jan 8th at Birmingham Conservatoire at Birmingham City University, with the premier of Marc’s newest pieces called Black Bile, composed in 2012.

In connection with Alexander Street Press, (with whom we already have a  subscription to Classical Music Library) we have set up a trial to their sister product Classical Scores Library (active until February 8th. For off-campus access, click here.) The score of Marc’ s piece can be viewed here to help assess a score before and after a premiere performance.

Please comment here or send any feedback on this resource direct to Francis Firth, Liaison Librarian, Birmingham Conservatoire and Birmingham School of Acting.
