Don’t just eat your GREENS, work amongst them too!


We have all heard about the health benefits of green leafy vegetables on our bodies but did you also know that surrounding yourself around green leafy plants can also have health benefits on our bodies too? Numerous scientific studies have shown that just adding some green indoor plants to a workplace environment can bring major positive benefits to workers. Maybe we should consider adding some green indoor plants to our workspace at BCU.

 Here are the top five benefits that ‘Greening Up’ indoor workspaces can bring:

  1. They can decrease stress. The colour green is believed to have a relaxing and calming effect on humans, which can help bring down work related tension, anxiety, anger and hostilities, which all helps to lift workers’ spirits and makes a happy working environment for everyone.

  1. They can have a positive effect on sickness and absence rates. Studies have found that introducing indoor plants to offices cannot only decrease symptoms of stress, depression, fatigue and concentration problems, but also dry skin and irritation of the nose and eyes, making the environment more comfortable to work in.
  1. They can improve air quality. NASA scientists have discovered that certain plants are adept at removing chemicals from the air, making it cleaner for humans to breathe. Also Indoor plants can also reduce carbon dioxide levels in both building with and without air conditioning, which it great for rooms without windows that open.
  1. They can reduce background noise. Studies have found that office plants can have a positive effects on noise in indoor work environments. Large pot plants can absorb the distracting effects of background sounds and strategically positioned can help you to dim sound levels significantly because they break up sound waves resulting in a change of direction, thus a reduction in the frequency of the sound.
  1. They can increase productivity and boost creativity. Attention restoration theory suggests that looking at nature can help renew attention after exerting mental energy such as looking at computer screens all day long. This is because it can make the brain shift into a different processing mode, helping make people more relaxed, so more able to concentrate on their work.


All these benefits make green indoor plants ideal for our libraries and offices, where staff and students spend most of their time during the day. If green indoor plants can help us all to work better and feel happier and relaxed then maybe we should seriously start considering introducing them at BCU, especially in our libraries, what do you think?
