Matt O’Leary is a Reader in Education at Birmingham City University. His main research interests focus on the impact of education policy on practice, as well as teacher learning and teacher assessment. He is well known internationally for his work on classroom observation, which has been instrumental in challenging engrained orthodoxies and influencing policy makers and national debates. He is the author of Classroom observation: A guide to the effective observation of teaching and learning (2014) and author and editor of the recent book Reclaiming lesson observation: supporting excellence in teacher learning (2016), both published by Routledge.

Dr Vanessa Cui is an early career academic researcher and currently employed as Research Assistant in Education at Birmingham City University. Her main research interests focus on Higher Education (HE) learning and teaching (L & T), particularly how policy, scholarship and L & T practices come together at institutional and programme levels. An experienced education developer in higher education, Vanessa has been working in the research and development of HE L & T since 2009. Her previous experiences include leading and coordinating several institution wide pedagogical projects and networks at Nottingham Trent University where she worked as a Learning & Teaching Officer and at Liverpool John Moores University as a Research Assistant to Learning Development.
